How to name your SKUs

  • Start with a short category code you will still recognise in a year: TSH, MUG, HVAC.
  • Add only the attributes that distinguish a variant — colour, size, material.
  • Finish with a padded sequence (001, 002) so codes sort correctly in a spreadsheet.
  • Keep codes under about 16 characters so they fit on a label.
  • Never reuse a code from a discontinued product; it corrupts your history.

A SKU (stock keeping unit) is your own internal code for a product variant. Unlike a barcode, you choose the format, so it should tell you at a glance what the item is.
What makes a good SKU format?
Keep it short, readable and consistent: a category prefix, one or two attributes such as colour or size, then a sequential number. Avoid spaces, avoid letters that look like numbers (O and 0, I and 1) and never reuse a retired code.
